The Calhoon MEBA Engineering School
The
Calhoon MEBA Engineering School,
located in Easton, MD, is largely responsible for allowing MEBA members
to stay at the top of their game. The nation’s premier institution of
continuing maritime education, MEBA’s training facility ensures that
MEBA officers further heighten their already-elevated levels of
competence and experience.
Established in 1966 to provide contracted companies of District 1 - MEBA
with qualified marine engineers, the Calhoon MEBA Engineering School is
proud to be the U.S.'s first joint maritime industry-labor training
institution. The School’s focus remains on its core business of maritime
education, service to the MEBA members, and advancement of excellence to
the MEBA contracted companies for almost 40 years.
The
School, led by Director Joyce Matthews, does a
masterful job of bringing members into compliance with complex
certification requirements such as STCW-95, OPA-90, and Tankerman/PIC.
Instructors have been instrumental in schooling mariners on important
CBR-D training that teaches students defense methods in regard to
weapons of mass destruction, small arms training and MSC accepted
Government Vessel Operations. This module was required for mariners
sailing overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Furthermore, the
School is already equipped to handle any training that would be required
as a result of the recently enacted Maritime Transportation Security
Act.
The
School was recently recertified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), the
prestigious Norwegian classification society. DNV is part of the Calhoon
School's long-term program to maintain itself as a globally recognized
center of maritime continuing education. Such recognition benefits all
members of the MEBA by further raising the profile of the Union in the
international maritime community and increasing the value of Calhoon
School education to our members. The Calhoon MEBA Engineering School
helps justify MEBA’s claim that the union is the nation’s finest source
of maritime labor.
