APPLYING FOR MEMBERSHIP WITH MEBA

TO MAKE APPLICATION

  • Possess a USCG 3A/E Unlimited Steam and Motor License

  • Obtain 120 days licensed engineer sailing time on a MEBA contracted vessel within 2 years of date of application (Academy training sea time shall count provided applicant provides to MEBA proof of completion (USCG discharges) of 60 days of licensed engineer sailing time on MEBA contracted vessels within 12 months of date of application)

  • Submit two (2) letters of recommendation from a Chief or First Assistant engineer with whom you have sailed for at least 30 days as a licensed engineer under a MEBA contract

  • Payment of all applicable service charges/fees

GROUP SHIPPING STATUS

  • When making application for MEBA membership, your initial group status will be Group III

  • After MEBA’s District Investigating Committee (DIC) has reviewed and approved your application, you will be issued an applicant book and group shipping card (sent to the Port where application was filed)

  • Openings in Group II are filled based on earliest date of application provided applicant has on file with Headquarters 150 days MEBA sailing time

  • Group II to Group I are generally by total sailing time when there are openings without regard to date of application

TO BECOME A MEBA MEMBER

  • Completion of at least 200 days of licensed engineer sailing time (excludes vacation time) after date of application on MEBA contracted vessels

  • Initiation Fee paid in full/regular (quarterly) service charges paid for minimum of 2 years

  • License upgraded to a minimum of Unlimited 2A/E steam or motor within 5 years from date of application

  • Verification of above and submitted to DIC at MEBA Headquarters in Washington DC
